It may sound like something straight out of a Mummy sequel, but it’s actually the century-old law that grants the U.S. president the ability to declare national monuments—an eclectic collection of protected places that includes American icons from Mount St. Helens to the Statue of Liberty. Today, there’s another monumental effort underway in California.

Squak Mountain is a forested peak in Washington’s gorgeous “Issaquah Alps.” Despite the nickname and the feeling of remoteness its visitors enjoy, these quiet woods are just a half-hour from the bustle of downtown Seattle. In this fast-growing metro, we’re helping planners tackle the question of how to provide a larger population with the same access to the outdoors that makes the Pacific Northwest special.
